The orange afternoon sun is on my back when I bring my car to a stop about a block away from the well-to-do little store on the corner of the street. When I turn my ignition off, I lean back and just stare at it, letting out a deep breath.

How long has it been?

The light playing off the glass window panes make it impossible to see inside the shop, but the sign outside is clear as ever: Bathing Beauty. I feel a smile on my face. As many mixed memories as it stirs up in me, there’s something comforting about knowing it’s still there, unchanged as ever. Maybe even a little nicer.

I catch a glimpse of myself in the car mirror. I’ve changed so much over the years. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was just a teenager, freshly landed in America. I kept my hair cut short back then, and my face was clean-shaven. I run a hand through the long locks that hang nearly to my shoulders now. It’s grown out thick and wavy. Even I have to admit it’s unkempt, and the short, coarse black beard on my face matches.

My voice sounds different, too. I think back to the thick accent I had in those years that I was still learning English, fresh from the old country. I’m so used to it now that English almost sounds as natural as my native Italian on my tongue. I might as well be a different person.

Better that way, I think. When I look into that mirror, I’m not sure I even see myself anymore. What I do see is the face of a man who’s done terrible things. A “made man,” they call us in this country. Mafioso.

What are you really doing here, Bruno?

My mind flashes back to her face, that gorgeous face that’s kept me going all this time. A bright candle in the darkness.

That face doesn’t need to know fear ever again. It doesn’t need to know me.

So why am I here, coming to risk dragging the past back? I don’t dare turn the ignition and drive off. I’ve made my decision, and I’m a man of my word.

After all, I tell myself, I’m not here just to see her, to remind myself that she’s alive and living happily, that what I did for her was all worth it. I’m here to make sure she’s safe.

Review

First off, be aware that this ends on a cliffy as I call them. That’s because this juicy goodness from M. Malone and Nana Malone is told in a trilogy of books. I’m not always crazy about that format, and I usually wait until all of the books are out first, but Noah sounded like such a hottie I couldn’t resist.

 

This falls under the ‘Best Friend’s Sister’ trope, and it’s a good one. Lucia is still mourning the loss of her brother, who was killed 6 years earlier. She’s determined to get to the answer of who killed him. Noah is her brother’s best friend. He owns a security company, and is doing his level best to keep Lucia from digging into her brother’s death, because the more she digs, the more danger she is in. He also wants her, but is determined to keep away. You know, the old ‘I want her, can’t have her, she’s too good for me” and so on. The sparks fly and oooh wait for it….big cliffy at the end! Despite that? Loved it!! And so will you!

Brent interjected. “I should probably be going.”

Lucia gripped his forearm harder. “No. Stay. Noah is going. Aren’t you Noah?”

Noah grinned, his devilish smile bringing a mischievous twinkle to his eyes. Looking at the two of them in close proximity, Lucia could see clearly that there was no competition. Noah had dark sooty lashes that framed those intense whiskey-colored eyes, high cheekbones, a straight Roman nose, and full lips that tilted crookedly when he smiled. The man was gorgeous and he knew it. Which was a problem. Because he often used it to get what he wanted.

Brent, in comparison, also had dark hair, but not as dark as Noah’s. It also didn’t fall in disarray where some parts looked styled and other parts unkempt, but mostly looking like he’d just rolled out of bed. Or he’d rolled out of bed with someone. Brent’s eyes were a pale blue. Kind. He was cute in that boy-next-door, All-American kind of way. He didn’t look like he belonged in a fashion magazine, not like Noah did.

Feeling a little uncharitable comparing Brent so unfavorably with Noah, she had to concede that he was at least tall. Not as tall as Noah, but few men could compare to Noah’s towering height. Besides it wasn’t about looks, or height, or charisma, anyway.

Annoyed with herself, Lucia closed her eyes, hoping maybe this was all a bad dream, but when she opened them again Noah was still there. With him in the room, it was hard to breathe. He dominated and sucked up all the air, silently pulling her towards him with his gravitational force alone. It was like poor Brent wasn’t even there.

“Now, Lucia, I know you’d like to think you’re in charge right now. But you’re not. You don’t know this guy. And you invited him back to your place? I thought I taught you better than that.”

Brent tried to make an escape again. “Lucia, why don’t you deal with this guy? And we’ll try this again later.”

“No. You’re not going anywhere.”

Noah pushed himself to a seated position. “Oh yes he is. Because, you and I need to discuss what the hell this is for.” He held up the party gift from the bachelorette party.

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no.

In that moment, Lucia prayed to every saint her grandmother had ever forced her to pray to. Prayed to the Virgin Mary then to Jesus. Heck, for good measure, she added Buddha in there too. Just in case. But nothing happened. The ground did not open and swallow her.

Instead, she stood with her hand on Brent’s arm, staring at Noah as he held up the largest purple dildo she’d ever seen in her life.

Brent’s mouth fell open but no sound came out. As mortified as she was, Lucia couldn’t really blame him. The stupid thing was over a foot long, and thick. Really, really thick. Like thicker than a cucumber. She’d certainly never used the thing. It was a gag gift.

“How dare you go through my things!” she squeaked.

Noah shrugged. “I didn’t go through your things. The drawer was open. The thing was practically sticking out of it. Making its escape.”

Next to her, Brent shifted his gaze to her.

“That’s not mine,” she whispered. “I m-mean it is but I’ve never used it. It’s a gag gift from a bachelorette party.” She swung her gaze to Noah. “Put that down.”

“Not a chance. I mean, this thing is fascinating. I’m no stranger to toys myself. As far as I’m concerned, they can always enhance the situation. I’m not one of those guys that feel jealous or threatened. Matter of fact, I’m all for a little solo play. But this thing.” He held it up and shook it around. “Even I’ve never seen anything like it. And I’ve had a lot of practice.”

He turned his attention to Brent. “No disrespect to you, but I don’t think you can live up to this. It vibrates and rotates! Even I feel a little frightened by this thing.”

Screw the ground opening up and swallowing her whole. Just shoot her now. That would end this quickly. Shoot her. Send her little behind to heaven. Because she was done. Noah was bending the dildo around as it wiggled in his hands. He pushed the button, and the damn thing rotated on its own, making a whirring sound. Oh God. Could this get any worse?

Brent fixed his gaze on her. “I’m going to go.”

“No, please don’t go.”

She lunged and grabbed at the dildo, tugging when Noah refused to release it. The silicone material bent in ways Lucia was sure it wasn’t intended to as they fought over it. This was easily one of the most undignified moments of her life but she just couldn’t take it anymore. Noah’s smug face as he watched her struggling to get a better grip on the wiggling, gyrating piece of plastic only made it worse.

“Ugh, let go!”

In a fit of sudden anger, Lucia kicked him in the shin. And in his surprise, Noah let go of his end of the toy. The next few seconds would forever play in her mind in slow motion as she watched the toy fly end over end and hit Brent directly in the face.

“Ouch!”

Lucia covered her mouth in horror as the toy fell to his feet. The silence that followed was only broken by the sounds of the still-running toy, wiggling over the carpet.

Noah guffawed. “My bad. Did I get it in your mouth? Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean anything. What’s a little dick in the mouth between friends, am I right?”

Sometimes, a book comes along that makes you squirm. Maybe, because you are totally uncomfortable, maybe because you are turned on, or it could be a bit of both. The Bad Guy is a bit of both for me. Sebastian Lindstrom is the bad guy in this story, the “White Knight” is Link, Sebastion’s VP of Marketing in the company that Sebastian is the CEO of, then, there is Camille Briarlane. She’s a teacher, biologist, and botanist. Most of all, she becomes the obsession of both men.

But as we get into this story, we start to wonder. We know Sebastian is not quite right. He doesn’t process emotions like the rest of us, but he does do quite a bit for Camille that makes you say hmmm. Then there is our white knight, maybe he’s not so white after all?

I absolutely loved this book! And I really liked Sebastian, where in the beginning, I was all for someone hitting him with a lead pipe. Camille is a cool customer, if not a bit much into her plants. And Mint? You’ll love that kid!

Jungle Rapture is the first book in the Jungle Queens series written by M.A. Jewell, who is a new author to me. I’m awfully glad I picked up this book, and the only negative thing I have to say is that I was bummed that it was so short. (It’s one of Evernight’s Reading On The Go books). Shifter books are a genre that I’ve only gotten into over the past couple of years, and it’s a very fluid world other than they shift and want mates. Ms Jewell has written a richly, lush world for her story and I was so impressed with the detail and the characters.

We pretty much deal with Kelsi Gorman and Jamie Salazar for the entirety. Kelsi finds herself in quite a bit of trouble with some poachers at the beginning of the book. Jamie is a black jaguar shifter who is trying to keep his identity secret, both as the giant black jaguar he is, and who his human side is. So he helps Kelsi out, but as a jaguar, until he has no choice but to reveal himself to her, because after all, she’s his mate.

However, Kelsi has no clue who or what she is, and doesn’t believe or want Jamie as a mate. But after a day of violence, Kelsi has her eyes opened, but will she choose Jamie, or leave him?

I was completely riveted to this book, and was close to having a bit of a bratty foot stomping moment because there wasn’t any more book to read. You’ll definitely want to check this one out, and I’ve found myself a new author to love

Jaime stayed silent in the face of her outburst. With a deliberate nod, he stood. She guessed him to be about six-foot-four. He toed off rubber boots that appeared way too small then lowered the zipper of his pants. Kelsi gasped before looking pointedly at the damp earth.

“I must disrobe or go naked the rest of our hike. Don’t look away. It’s essential you know me as I am.”

Kelsi jerked a nod. Her sanity rode on this next minute. His pants dropped to his feet, and he stepped from them. Her gaze followed the perfect, masculine form of his calves to his thighs. She gasped again. Still seated, she got a full frontal of the healthy weight at his groin.

Uncut, interesting. She forced herself to look him in the eye. The half-grin returned. He may be some unearthly, were-something, but he was still a typical man.

Jaime dropped to a prone position. “I’ll lie still in cat form. So you feel safe.”

“That’s thoughtful.” Kelsi couldn’t keep the sarcasm from her voice. Likely, he played her like some pervert exhibitionist. Although, he did have goods worth looking at.

“Remember, I cannot harm you. You are—special.”

Before she could ask what he meant, Jaime grimaced. His body shimmered with a dark light that grew beyond his form. The nimbus cast a beast shape around his body, darkened further, then melted away.

Kelsi’s strangled yelp cut the air. She scrambled back from the massive jaguar lying in Jaime’s place. Black Beauty. The cat settled his muzzle on his front paws and raised amazing blue eyes to her. True to Jaime’s word, the beast didn’t move a muscle.

Kelsi froze in wonder. If the dart drug did this, she’d know eventually. But wow, what a ride! Her knees sank into the damp earth as she crawled on all fours to the cat.

“Hi there, Black Beauty. Such a pretty boy.”

The lush fur, so close, called to her. As Jaime predicted, the jaguar’s sedate manner gave her a sense of safety. Ferns near his nose quivered in time with his regular breaths. She reached a hand to his neck and slid fingers into his pelt. Aside from leaning into her touch, the animal didn’t move.

Kelsi edged closer. She reveled in the nearness to the great cat. Like a child who couldn’t stay away from a fluffy kitten, she ruffled his ears then leaned in to nuzzle his fur. His luscious scent further soothed, melting away any remaining angst.

“Thank you for saving me,” she whispered. Fully into the fantasy, or her delirium, she lay next to him and stroked his side.

Black Beauty blinked and lifted his face to hers. He flicked his whiskers before the tip of his tongue dabbed her nose.

She giggled. A visceral part of her wanted the magnificent animal to accept her touch. All those times the big cats approached her—unusually interested in her over the other zookeepers—she’d yearned to tousle their ears or ruffle their fur. Logic never allowed her to indulge.

Petting the cat, she couldn’t help the smile that split her face. “You’re amazing.”

White light rose from the jaguar’s form enveloping her hand. While the glow hid his body, fur turned to bare skin under her touch. The halo of light receded. With that same knowing, half-smile, Jaime propped his head on a raised elbow and turned to his side. “So are you, anjo.”

His arousal lay prominent, front and center, along his abdomen. Kelsi’s mouth froze in an “O”. A beat too late, she yanked her arm to her own personal space. Heat flushed her cheeks and other hidden parts.

I get big time excited when Eden Bradley has a new book out, because for people like me, she’s a goddess. I’m a subbie and not afraid to say it, while I don’t mind reading BDSM books written by authors not in the lifestyle, I do prefer it. Eden knows what she’s writing about, which makes the experience for me as a reader, writer, blogger and yes, a sub, way more satisfying.

So, I excitedly dove into the book and then I stopped. The brakes went on for a couple of reasons. One, I’m not a fan of interracial books where it’s the woman. And it’s not because i’m racial, it’s because I put myself in the characters place, so that just turns it off for me. Then, the biggest reason…Layla is a Domme. That usually makes me just toss the book aside and be done with it, and when it’s the “male dom converts female domme into sub” storyline, I usually stay as far away from the book as I can, BUT this is Eden Bradley, so I decided to keep on going with it. Eden did a fantastic job with recent Scotland transplant Duff Stewart, cousin to Jaime. A hot Scot in a kilt with a killer bod and a brogue? Um, yeah. Bayside Desires by Melissa Foster is the first book in the Bayside Summers series which fits in her Love In Bloom series of books. (I’d be here for a long, long time if I listed all of those books) But the good part is that all of the books can be read as a standalone. I’ll stand right up and admit that the reason I decided to read this book initially was that it was set in Cape Cod, Mass. Seeing as how I’m from Massachusetts and have spent many a summer “Down the Cape”, it appealed.

I ended up loving it oh so very much, and for me to love a straight-up vanilla romance says a lot about the author. It was a total, feel-good, romantic, beachside read for me. I’m definitely going back to read it’s sister series. But the premise here is that straight-laced school teacher Desiree Cleary gets an e-mail from her wayward mom telling her she needs to come and run her Cape Cod art gallery for the summer because it might prolong her life. Desiree is in for a surprise when she shows up and so does her sister Violet, who got the same message, about HER. What mom Lizza does next is shocking.

But the uptight Desiree meets Rick Savage, who is partners with his brother and friend in Bayside Resort. He is down for a few weeks for renovations before flying back to DC for his stifling 80 hour a week company. He and Desiree meet with quite a splash, and the fireworks are instant. But it’s the Cosmos that brings them together. Problem is, both of them have jobs to go back to, and there’s one big problem for two estranged sisters to deal with.

There is lots of romance in this book, and by the end, (more like a third way through) you’ll fall in love with Rick and want him for your very own book boyfriend. He’s THAT swoon-worthy. Desiree just blooms throughout this book and becomes an amazing, loving woman you just want to hug. And the secondary characters are just fabulous! My absolute favorite was Violet, my soul sister. She had me laughing so hard at points, and despite her snark, she obviously loves and protects Desiree. My favorite line of the whole book was Violet to Des…

Lily is the second in the Force of Nature novellas by M. Horst and I will say this one was even more enjoyable than the first. It is one of those insta-love books, but seeing as how it’s short, and it is a fairy tale of sorts, it’s actually pretty appropriate for this series. And I’ll admit, once in awhile, a bit of love and sweetness just feels good with all of the other things going on nowadays.

Lily is supposed to marry Hail Royal because of a business deal her grandfather made. Not only is Hail Royal due a Flower female to wed and create his heirs, but Lily’s father is also happy about the monetary donation Royal will be making to his company. Of course, Lily is not thrilled, but even worse, her mother has her own company and has made a side deal to an arrogant, misogynistic, old, fat, pig of a man, Jasper Kingsley.a deal for her hand as well. Both men are invited to dinner.

Hail brings his brother Lake to the dinner because he’s interested in Lily’s sister, Rose, but before he can be properly introduced to Lily, Jasper muscles his way and gropes Lily, telling her that he can’t wait to own her and she’ll be on her knees and naked. Hail decides enough is enough when Jasper is groping her before the dinner rolls are even passed around, so they leave. Seriously, this was a fun read, and I really liked both Hail and Lily’s characters a lot. I’m positively chomping at the bit, (no, I’m not into pony play *snicker*) for Rose’s book. So far, I’m loving this series!
